This is an update to a blog we wrote back in 2013. But with the evolution of the learning platform – our demands of the systems have changed. If your LMS isn’t delivering beyond the basics – it may be time to upgrade. Here are some ways your LMS may be failing you:
Doesn’t help administrators
A modern learning platform should reduce the time administrators spend on mundane tasks. For example, enrolling users to courses and learning plans, should become automatic after you’ve configured the rules of your LMS.

Doesn’t facilitate social learning

From discussion forums and blogs to social media sharing, your LMS is a great way to connect a range of learners across your organisation, to share knowledge and expertise.
User interface isn’t intuitive
Today’s learners are used to navigating beautiful, intuitive websites, so their expectations of any digital medium are high. Your LMS needs to meet these expectations. If a learner struggles to navigate their way around the LMS, they will immediately switch off. Your LMS not only needs to provide an effective learning experience but also needs to make it easy for you to be able to perform daily tasks. A learner’s interaction with the system should be straight forward so that this doesn’t become a barrier to learning activities. Your user interface (UI) should therefore be simple, attractive and intuitive. The mark of a good LMS UI is the elimination of any needless actions which the learner must perform in order to interact with the LMS.
Doesn’t work on mobile
On average, we spend 24 hours a week online. Gone are the days of when organisations would have a training deck on desktop computers, expecting employees to go through them while they are in the office. Learners want to access knowledge on-the-go and at the point of need. LMS’s need to be available from any device. What your learners need is bite-sized knowledge that is delivered quickly, integrated into the day and easily accessible regardless of location. In short, they want the kind of mobile experience that they’re used to in their daily life. You don’t want to limit users learning potential, so you shouldn’t limit when they can engage with learning materials. Mobile learning is an ideal way to empower your learners to stay on top. Giving your learners access to online training on the go increases employee engagement significantly, as they can learn at a pace that suits them, easily connect with SMEs and access learning materials any time and place.
So, if your learning platform isn’t delivering on these, it may be worth a change. But this list is only important, if your LMS is meeting your needs at the basic level; does it give you the reporting data you need? Is it scalable? Does it integrate with your other systems?
