Welcome to the second instalment of ‘Ask the Articulate Trainer’. Today’s blog focuses on questions about Articulate Storyline. If you missed the first instalment, which focused on Rise, you can find it here.
Q: What’s the best way to create a reusable, customised course template in Storyline, including custom navigation buttons? I’d like to place our brand logo above the course index.
A: Templates in Storyline are created by setting up all the consistent elements of your branding in your Slide Master, this includes:
- Basic slide layouts
- Colour schemes
- Font families
- Any customised on-screen navigation and associated triggers.
Make sure you save this as a theme within the slide master menu.
You can then create any standard interactive slides you wish, such as click & reveal or drag & drop layouts with placeholder content that can be quickly switched for other content when reused.
The next step is to build your global Player settings, including standard features and the logo, colour schemes and text labels. Make sure you save these player settings.
If you are using Storyline 2 or 3, you should now ‘Save As’ and save the file as a ‘Storyline Template’, rather than a project and place it in the Storyline Template folder in ‘My Articulate Projects’.
Now, each time your start a new project use “Import from story template”.
If you are using Storyline 360 in a Team Licence you can share your template as Team Slides, and use those to begin your new projects.
Q: How can you change your character to a different one without retaining the original choice?
A: You can change your character easily in Articulate Storyline by following the steps below:
- Select the character on screen
- Open the Character Tools Design menu
- Select the Character option and choose your new character
- If you have created states within an illustrated character these will only be maintained if you select another illustrated character
Q: What are your best practices for designing 508-compliant courses in Storyline 360?
A: Best practice guidelines for creating accessible Articulate Storyline courses can be found in the Articulate Support pages.
However, the key elements that can make a big difference to a significant number of people are:
- Colour schemes / text contrast
- Inclusion of voiceovers & closed captions
- Setting tab order including alt-tags
Q: How do you use the States format painter?
A: The format painter can be used to copy any standard formatting from one object and paste it onto another. You can do so by following these simple steps:
- Select the object with the required formatting – make sure you’re not in “text edit mode” on shapes that will allow text to be added, i.e. buttons/shapes/text boxes
- Click the Format Painter button on the Home ribbon
- Click the button once if you are pasting the formatting onto one other object
- Double-click the button if you want to paste the formatting onto more than one object
- Single click on the target object, or objects in turn.
